Research
Kaiser Oakland IM Residents regularly present original research at regional and national specialty and subspecialty conferences. Residents interested in research learn clinical research skills and are supported with protected time for research, on-site research physician and biostatisticians, and funding to attend and present at meetings. See below for recent award-winning presentations!
- Oakland Kaiser has a strong 60-year affiliation with the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research (DOR), the largest non-University-based epidemiology research group in the country.
- Dedicated Assistant Program Director for Research Dr. Joan Lo, MD (Endocrinologist and DOR Research Scientist) has created a 3-year research program that starts with introducing research opportunities early in training. Residents interested in research will meet with Dr. Lo, GME research manager Nirmala Ramalingam MPP, and research faculty to develop and design an individualized project plan. Residents have protected time in all 3 years to engage in research, scholarship, and innovation.
- We financially support our residents presenting at regional/national conferences
- Scholarly activity is supported by a full-time GME Research Program Manager
Quality Improvement
All Kaiser Oakland residents learn QI methodologies during the 3-year program in QI led by Assistant Program Directors Dr. Nicole Tran, Dr. Somalee Banerjee, and GME Senior Project Manager, Nirmala Ramalingam, MPP. Residents have the opportunity to join medical center and regional QI and Patient Safety initiatives, as well as see projects from systems analysis through project implementation and PDSA cycles during their second and third year. Resident QI projects have not only enhanced patient care and outcomes but also served as a means to decrease health disparities and promote the bigger mission of equity and inclusion. Additionally, they have also provided a scholarly outlet: In the recent 6 years of the northern California ACP Conference QI competition, Kaiser Oakland IM residents have won 8 of the 12 possible awards!
