Dear Prospective Residency Applicant,
Thank you for your interest in our program. Our mission is to train highly skilled, compassionate and culturally-responsive Otolaryngologists who will become future leaders. Our program was founded in 1969, and we are proud to foster a rigorous yet collaborative learning environment in Oakland and the San Francisco Bay Area, one of the most dynamic regions in the country.
Our residents graduate with over 3,000 surgical cases (the national average is ~2,000), learning from generalists and fellowship-trained faculty members in each sub-specialty. Our residency program is based at the Kaiser Permanente (KP) Oakland Medical Center, which serves as a tertiary referral center for KP Northern California’s 4.5 million members. Kaiser Permanente has a long history and has developed into one of the largest healthcare organizations in the country and one of the best healthcare employers.
Our residents’ clinical rotations are designed for educational value, rather than service needs. Clinical research and quality improvement projects are an integral part of the curriculum, with four months dedicated to these endeavors. Resident projects are supported by the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research, the largest non-University based epidemiology research group in the country.
We respect and celebrate all forms of diversity. Our Oakland community is one of the most diverse in the nation, and we are committed to recruiting a diverse group of residents. We also support our local and global communities through outreach and medical mission trips.
Approximately half of our graduates pursue fellowships, and our alumni thrive in a diverse mix of specialties and practice settings.
