Welcome to the Bay!
The Bay Area is home to over 7.7 million residents and encompasses San Francisco, Napa Valley, Silicon Valley, and the vibrant East Bay—home to the City of Oakland. This is an historically, ecologically, and culturally rich area.
There are several local farmers’ markets with everything from produce grown just down the road to specialty meats, gourmet pickles, and fresh fish. Our local restaurant Chez Panisse is credited with sparking the California cuisine style of cooking as well as a focus on local food supply chains.
Nature is Calling
The Bay Area is naturally rich in parks, beaches, and mountains all within close distance. Outdoor hobbies of our residents include trail-running, surfing, skiing, snowboarding, backpacking, and mountain-biking to name a few. For those who are more domesticated, Oakland also has many parks excellent for picnicking, frisbee, and just plain relaxing.
Activities
There are several museums in the area, including the Oakland Museum of California and the Berkeley Art Museum. Your options expand even further if you cross the bridge into San Francisco!
Oakland hosts many unique events. Residents have enjoyed the East Bay Bike Parties, Hoodslam, and First Fridays.
Department Fun
We have an annual retreat to relax and hang out together, usually at a beach or on a mountain. We also gather regularly for journal club, and informally to just hang out, make cookies, or eat ice cream on picnic blankets.
