Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Oakland - Rotation Schedule

Our program is structured to facilitate direct learning from faculty. We collaborate with residents to continuously improve the educational value of our rotations. Generous amounts of elective time and flexibility also allows residents to tailor their educational experience.

Residents spend the majority of their time at the Kaiser Permanente Oakland medical center but also rotate through Richmond, San Leandro, and Sacramento KP sites. Residents spend time during their intern and PGY-3 year at Highland Alameda County Hospital as well.

Example Schedule

In addition to the full spectrum of standard otolaryngology—head and neck surgical procedures, our residents are actively involved in the following:

  • Microvascular Reconstruction: 40-50 microvascular free flaps per year in our department.
  • Facial Feminization Surgery: over 200 cases annually including frontal cranioplasty, hairline advancement, browlift, rhinoplasty, mandibuloplasty, lip lift/augmentation and chondrolaryngoplasty.
  • Cosmetic Facial Plastic Surgery: Botox, fillers, mini and full facelifts, laser resurfacing, browlifts, eyelid surgery and over 150 rhinoplasties per year.
  • Facial Nerve Rehabilitation: Botox therapy, nerve transfer procedures and Gracilis free flaps.
  • Craniofacial Surgery: cleft lip, cleft palate and microtia reconstruction surgeries.
  • Skeletal Dysplasia Clinic: caring for patients with achondroplasia, mucopolysaccharidoses, and osteogenesis imperfecta.
  • Sleep Surgery: palate surgery, tongue base surgery, hypoglossal nerve stimulator implantation, and maxillomandibular advancement.
  • Facial Trauma: We are a referral center and our residents care for these patients with our maxillofacial surgery team.
  • Oculoplastics Surgery: Our residents have the opportunity to operate with our oculoplastics surgeon on eyelid reconstruction and endoscopic DCR and orbital decompression.

Alameda Health System – Wilma Chan Highland Hospital Experience

Residents spend four months during PGY-1 year and 2 months during PGY-3 year at Highland Hospital, Oakland’s only Adult Level 1 Trauma Center.  The county hospital training experience offers additional exposure to trauma management and working with an underserved patient population.

Call Schedule

Overview

Our residency program features a home call system, allowing residents to sleep at home or spend time away from the hospital when there are no active patient needs, as long as they can reach the hospital within an appropriate timeframe if an emergency arises.  While there are no designated post-call days off, we maintain a supportive environment to ensure residents can rest and perform safely.

Key Details

  • Coverage: Residents are on call at both Oakland and Richmond Medical Centers.  The commute between the two locations is about 20 minutes.
  • Weekday Night Call: Begins at 5 PM and ends at 8 AM the next morning.
  • Weekend Call: Starts Friday at 5 PM and continues through to Monday at 8 AM.  During this period, one resident (or one intern and a chief) and one attending are on call.  Residents will round on inpatients daily over the weekend and respond to consults.
  • Schedule Rotation:
    • Junior residents typically take call one weekend per month and one weekday per week while on the ENT service.
    • Interns do not take call at Kaiser when they are on service at Highland Hospital, which has its own call system.

This balanced approach is designed to ensure comprehensive training while supporting a healthy work-life balance.
