Medical Students – Educational Tracks - Introduction to Integrated Health Care

A Note to 2024 Applicants

Every student and program across the country has been impacted by the current Covid-19 pandemic. We recognize the disparities created for students due to the pandemic impact on their local community. Based on the recommendation by the Coalition for Physician Accountability, we made the difficult decision to not host in-person sub-interns during the 2024 summer program. The decision was not made lightly. We know this negatively impacts students who desire to rotate with us to get to know our program, faculty, and residents. We want to prioritize keeping students safe and our commitment to an equitable recruitment season.

 Introduction to Integrated Healthcare (IIHC)
2024 Virtual Summer Program
for Rising 2nd-Year Medical Students*

Session One: June 8-28 or Session Two: July 6-26

Since 2013 the Introduction to Integrated Health Care (IIHC) program has successfully afforded medical students completing their first year an opportunity to experience the Kaiser Permanente integrated healthcare system which values technology, prevention, and a diverse workforce to obtain national-leading quality outcomes for its patients. Medical students will experience the healthcare system of tomorrow today at Kaiser Permanente and learn more about our excellent residency programs.

As an IIHC participant, you will virtually learn from our outstanding faculty and resident physicians, including our support staff, and will be exposed to culturally sensitive care and population-based health care. Medical students demonstrating a superior interest in community health and who seek to promote culturally sensitive care are being sought for this unique opportunity.

We are pleased to offer two virtual training sessions covering a Deliberate Practice framework, accessing and sustaining an optimized performance and learning state, and developing a commitment and meta-outcome to support student focus, intrinsic motivation, and Step 1 Exam Success. The second component will focus on developing an Exam Preparation Plan and Schedule, applying learning strategies, and test-taking strategies to support their Exam preparation activities.

The IIHC virtual/online summer program will be offered twice in 2024.  Session One will be offered from June 8 through 28. Session Two will be offered from July 6 through 26. You can expect to virtually learn from our faculty and resident physicians from medical centers throughout Northern California; Oakland/Richmond, San Francisco, Santa Clara, San Jose/Gilroy/Scott’s Valley, Vallejo, Central Valley (Modesto/Stockton/Manteca/Tracy), Greater Southern Alameda Area (San Leandro/Fremont/Hayward), Walnut Creek/Antioch, and Fresno. Participants will have online access to the program 24/7 during their assigned three-week session, however, 3-4 daily evening live virtual presentations will be offered, along with a half-day online orientation at the start of each session, and two half-day Saturdays for workgroup/cohort development.

Applicants are asked to state their current interests in medicine and express their current involvement in serving diverse communities. Finalists will be virtually paired with physician mentors in various clinical settings of their choice. Students will also participate in weekly online didactic and reflection sessions. Please indicate in your application in which session you are able to participate (Session One or Session Two).

The Introduction to Integrated Health Care program was an unforgettable experience for me. Even amid a pandemic, the IIHC team took special care of us, were incredibly communicative, and really sought to go above and beyond for us. The staff put in extra effort to make the program accessible and it surely paid off. Not only did I get to learn from a variety of expert physicians, but I also learned more about Kaiser Permanente as a whole; their culture, their history, and what it means to be a team member. The sessions faculty held for us were packed with groundbreaking research and used a special lens of cultural humility, which only opened our eyes more. Sometimes discussion around research can be lofty however, faculty included real-world examples and made that type of knowledge more tangible. The IIHC program fosters a culture of growth and comradeship, which I especially felt with my cohort. I had the privilege to meet students from all over the country and learned from them as well. I will be sure to use the experience and knowledge I’ve gained from IIHC in my journey with medicine. I am proud to say I am a 2020 IIHC alumnus!– 2020 Participant
