Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Oakland - Research

Dr. David Chou presenting his research at our annual Bay Area Resident Research Symposium

Clinical Research

All residents participate actively in research, which is critical to the continued improvement of our field. We expect every resident to present at national meetings and publish at least one large study. Residents are encouraged to design their own research studies. The program provides time and funding for residents to attending conferences at which they are presenting.

Residents are allocated 3+ months of protected research time, and are supported by Kaiser Permanente’s Division of Research. The Division of Research (DOR) is currently home to nearly 600 employees who are involved in 454 ongoing research projects. Since its founding in 1961, DOR researchers have published more than 5,000 peer-reviewed articles including over 500 scientific papers each year.

Miranda Weintraub, PhD, MPH, provides support for our resident research projects through our graduate medical education office.

Quality Improvement

Each resident completes at least one quality improvement project during their residency.  These have ranged from decreasing opiate use among post-operative patients to reducing waste generated during surgical cases.
