About Me
Dr. Victoria Johnson recently completed her family medicine residency at Cone Health in Greensboro NC which is a community based program with a very diverse patient base and large underserved population. She gained invaluable experience working with communities most at need including a large refugee population. Dr. Johnson is currently a Community Medicine and Health Policy fellow at KP Sacramento. She is also a National Health Service Corps scholar who is committed to providing excellent comprehensive healthcare to underserved communities. Dr. Johnson is passionate about health equity and reducing health disparities and aims to be a strong advocate for her patients, emphasizing preventative care and empowering her patients to live healthier lives.
Overview
Sacramento’s KPCMPH fellowship at the California State Capital is well positioned at the intersection of urban growth, agriculture, and advocacy. The mission of the Sacramento KPCMPH fellowship is to train the next generation of health equity leaders. Our fellowship will prepare physicians for a career in service and advocacy work, with a focus on underserved communities. Fellows are provided with unique experiences not typically available to a physician starting out in an entry-level position.
Fellowship activities include:
- Fellow will spend clinical time providing care for underserved patients at a local FQHC Comminicare+Ole.
- Fellow will work closely with Sacramento County Department of Public Health on various projects of their choosing
- Participation in a 2 week health policy elective to increase their knowledge of key health policy issues facing their community and the nation
- Optional funded global health rotation
- Caring for patients at safety-net and school-based settings
- Teaching & mentoring medical students and residents in community health and adding to our JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion) curriculum
- Strengthening pipeline/pathway efforts to recruit under-represented in medicine students
- Attending bi-monthly seminars on community health topics
- Evaluating health needs of specific populations in Sacramento, with focus on our unhoused and housing insecure population
- Advising community health groups
Bi-monthly seminars guide fellows on essential principles of public health and community medicine. Topics include review of health policies with attention to the impact of structures that foster health inequities; program development and evaluation; leadership development; health literacy; trauma informed care; and social determinants of health.
Finally, fellows collaborate throughout the year with community stakeholders to design and implement a specific health intervention of their choosing. These interventions build capacity by introducing tools of integrated healthcare, such as quality measurement, chronic care management, and health education, to low-resource settings.
Our downtown Sacramento location provides many experiences and opportunities to partner on public health efforts and improve the health of our underserved community, with focus on our unhoused and housing insecure population.
Community Advocacy and Community Project
Fellow is expected to complete a scholarly project in community health. Topics can vary from quality improvement implementation at local community clinic, research project through Kaiser Permanente Northern California’s Division of Research, medical education, public health or health policy, further enhancing pipeline/pathway programs etc.
Fellows will have regular protected time to develop their projects, meet with mentors, researchers, community partners and other KP community Health fellows in the region.
Fellows will be expected to actively participate in community initiatives, health fairs, advocacy and other activities that assist with KP efforts to reduce health disparities and develop and recruit diverse students and physicians.
Didactics
- Fellows will meet regularly with other Community Medicine fellows in region for didactic learning.
- Fellows will have opportunity to attend lectures hosted by California Department of Public Health/Sacramento County Department of Public Health.
- Fellows will have opportunity to further enhance the community medicine rotation curriculum for the KP Sacramento Valley Family Medicine Residency Program.
