Resident Awards and Accomplishments

Psychotherapy has been an area of strong resident interest, with several trainees seeking opportunities to further develop their skills as psychoanalytic psychotherapists. Kaiser Permanente San Jose’s proximity to the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis (SFCP), a valued non-profit training institute, provides unique opportunities for professional and personal growth.

Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training Programs

The following residents have been accepted into SFCP’s Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training Program (SF-PPTP), which offers didactic seminars, case conferences, reduced-fee consultation, and optional mentorship:

  • Bharat Sampathi, MD (Class of 2023): 2022–2024
  • Linna Duan, MD (Class of 2025): 2024–2026

Through SFCP’s sister program, the Palo Alto Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training Program (PAPPTP), additional residents have also pursued advanced psychotherapy training:

  • Courtney Hsu, MD (Class of 2026): 2025–2027
  • Feng Hsaio, MD (Class of 2027): 2025–2027

National Recognition in Psychotherapy

Our residents have also been recognized nationally for excellence in psychotherapy. The Austen Riggs Award for Excellence in Psychotherapy honors residents who demonstrate skill and promise in psychodynamic psychotherapy and psychiatry, or in biopsychosocial research.

  • Linna Duan, MD (Class of 2025): Awarded 2025

In addition, the American Group Psychotherapy Association (AGPA) Group Foundation Scholarship was awarded to:

  • Courtney Hsu, MD (Class of 2026): Awarded 2023
  • Angela Song, MD (Class of 2025): Awarded 2025

This scholarship supports the training of future group therapists and emphasizes Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in mental health.

Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

The APA Foundation Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship supports residents pursuing careers in child psychiatry through mentorship and participation in APA Annual Meetings.

  • Jason Tran, MD (Class of 2024): 2023–2025
  • Eugenia Chen, MD (Class of 2025): 2024–2026

Minority Mental Health Fellowship

The APA SAMHSA Minority Fellowship Program (MFP) works to reduce disparities in mental health care and offers support for a mental health equity capstone project, access to the APA Learning Center curriculum, leadership development, mentorship, travel to the APA Annual Meeting, participation in APA governance, and lasting professional connections.

Excellence in Education

The Association for Academic Psychiatry (AAP) Resident Psychiatric Educator Award recognizes outstanding promise as educators and scholars in psychiatry. This two-year honor provides mentorship, academic collaboration, and opportunities to present scholarly work at national meetings.

Geriatric Psychiatry

The American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry (AAGP) Scholars Program provides mentorship, small-group learning, and career development for trainees interested in geriatric psychiatry.

Clinical Neuroscience

The National Neuroscience Curriculum Initiative (NNCI) Ambassadors Fellowship trains residents and early career psychiatrists to integrate modern neuroscience into clinical practice and education.
