At Kaiser Permanente and at the KP SJ Psych Residency, we believe in equity and inclusion for all, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual identity, socioeconomic status, neurodivergence/ability, or other identity attributes. We strive to weave equity, inclusion, and diversity into the fabric of our organization and communities to promote positive change and superior performance. Equity is critical in our journey to bring high-quality care and training to our residents and the communities we serve. Our goals are to promote, recruit and retain our program’s diverse residents and faculty, to prepare for interactions with each other and our patients, to foster an inclusive work environment for medical students, residents, faculty, and staff; with the goal to better understand, engage and serve our patients within the greater San Jose community.
Residency applications undergo holistic review and interviewers undergo implicit bias training yearly.
Our Community of Patients
Kaiser Permanente serves a diverse patient population, including 45% of all Californians. Throughout their time here at KPSJ, residents have the opportunity to interact with a diverse patient population not only within the Kaiser system, but also during community psychiatry rotations at external sites such as San Jose Behavioral Health and Valley Medical Center.

La Salud Permanente Latinx Health Elective

Latinx patients access mental health in a variety of settings as such students will be exposed to psychiatrists (adult and child), family practice, and therapists to learn about our Latinx community and their mental health needs. Students will expand their medical knowledge and hone their interviewing and doctor-patient relationship skills. The core faculty in our Psychiatry Residency Program will provide students with daily individual supervision and with opportunities for mentorship. Students will participate in our Psychiatry residency didactics and grand rounds. We serve a diverse patient population and have a rich education environment medical center wide.
