About the presenter

Ted O’Connell, MD, FAAFP, is the National Medical Director for Kaiser Permanente Medical Education and the Director of Medical Education for Kaiser Permanente Northern California. He is also an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the UC San Francisco School of Medicine.

Ted has authored over 20 medical textbooks, edited 10 additional textbooks, and has written over 900 textbook chapters as well as articles in peer-reviewed medical journals. Ted has been involved in medical education for over two decades, serving as Founding Program Director at the Kaiser Permanente Napa-Solano family medicine residency program for 10 years and the Program Director at the Kaiser Permanente Woodland Hills residency program for 7 years. Ted is Editor-In-Chief of Elsevier’s Clinical Key Student, an international medical education platform. Ted is also the award-winning host of several podcasts.

Ted received his undergraduate degree with honors in Psychology and Premedical Studies from the University of Notre Dame. He attended medical school at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and completed his residency and chief residency at UCLA-Santa Monica Medical Center. Ted has completed the Executive Leadership Program at Harvard Business School, the Emerging Leaders Program through The Permanente Medical Group, the Leading Innovations in Health Care and Education course through the Harvard-Macy Foundation, the Disruptive Strategy program at Harvard Business School, and the Design Thinking course through the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Southern California Permanente Medical Group.

Ted has been the recipient of the President’s Volunteer Service Award from AmeriCorps and the Points of Light Foundation, the Cecil Cutting Award for Innovation and Leadership from The Permanente Medical Group, and Physician of the Year from the Napa-Solano County Medical Society, and Physician Exceptional Contribution Award from the Southern California Permanente Medical Group.

About the presenter

Theresa Azevedo-Rousso is the Regional Senior Director and Designated Institutional Official (DIO) of Kaiser Permanente (KP) Northern California Undergraduate & Graduate Medical Education (KPNC). With over 30 years of experience in leading research and medical education, Theresa has been a dedicated leader within the KPNC team for the past 19 years. She is committed to developing programs that align with both KP’s and the community’s workforce development goals, while also driving innovation and empowering teams to achieve meaningful change.

As an executive leader, Theresa engages in facilitating faculty and resident development, ensuring rigorous accreditation and educational outcomes, and overseeing comprehensive program and administrative operations, workforce planning, and marketing strategies for KPNC’s residency and fellowship programs. Under her guidance, these programs train over 500 KP residents and fellows, 1,300+ affiliated residents and fellows, and over 800 medical students across twenty-one medical centers.

Theresa’s contributions are recognized nationally, particularly in encouraging conversations to address various healthcare education policies and practices. Her experience in education research has led to advancements in community workforce development, integrating quality and performance improvement across the educational continuum.

Theresa holds a bachelor’s degree from Saint Mary’s College of California and a master’s in public administration from the University of San Francisco. Her scholarly interests focus on areas such as community workforce development, integrating quality and performance improvement, addressing health inequities, analyzing the impact of healthcare policy on medical education, and leveraging technology to enhance educational outcomes.

Theresa resides in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she enjoys the region’s hiking and cycling trails. She is also a dedicated volunteer, actively contributing to several organizations such as the American Red Cross, Make-A-Wish Foundation, and serving as a writing coach for high school students.

About the presenter

Dr. Violeta Barroso is a clinician at Kaiser Permanente Watsonville. She developed the REPRESENT pathway program for pre-med undergraduate students and helped establish the UC Santa Cruz post-baccalaureate program. Dr. Barroso attended Stanford University school of medicine and completed residency training in Family Medicine at Kaiser Permanente Napa-Solano.

She grew up in the Salinas Valley and now lives in La Selva Beach with her husband. She loves this area and enjoys being part of an agricultural and beach community. As a child, she traveled with her family to the Watsonville area to help with harvests in the strawberry fields and the apple orchards. She feels truly blessed to be providing care in this amazing community.

In her free time she likes to sew, hike, go whale watching, listen to podcasts and spending time with her family.

Monica Kendrick, MD, FACOG

About the presenter

Monica Kendrick, MD, is a physician executive with extensive leadership experience in health care operations and strategic medical management. As the Physician in Chief and Chief of Staff at Kaiser Permanente San Francisco Medical Center, she oversees clinical operations across the medical center and nine satellite clinics, ensuring excellence in patient care, physician leadership, and strategic growth.

Kaiser Permanente San Francisco provides medical care to nearly 30% of San Francisco residents and focuses its care to serve the diverse patient population that reflects the city’s unique ethnic composition.  Under Dr. Kendrick’s leadership, the San Francisco Medical Center has achieved significant advancements in patient experience, clinical performance, and workforce development. Her teams have led initiatives to enhance hospital efficiency and redesign of primary care, and championed programs that support physician wellness and career development. She is deeply committed to building an inclusive, high-performing medical culture where clinicians feel empowered to innovate and provide exceptional care.

Dr. Kendrick is a practicing obstetrician/gynecologist. In prior leadership roles at Kaiser Permanente, she was Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology, led Northern California’s Maternal Mental Health initiatives, and led quality efforts for the San Francisco medical center. She studied medicine at UC Davis and did her residency at Kaiser Permanente San Francisco. She is a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and is a dedicated educator with Kaiser Permanente’s Residency Programs and UCSF School of Medicine.

Dr. Kendrick serves on key regional and executive committees, including the TPMG Board of Directors, Administrative Issues Committee, Transgender Health Steering Committee, Innovations Committee, and the Growth and Retention Council, where she leads long-term organizational strategy.

Dr. Kendrick lives in San Francisco, where she and her husband raised their two grown sons.

About the presenter

Lucia Martinez, MD, is the Regional Program Director for the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Community Medicine Fellowships. In addition to overseeing the community medicine fellows, she teaches medical students and residents completing their community medicine and family medicine rotations at the KP San Jose Family Medicine Residency Program and surrounding community clinics where they provide care to underserved and marginalized communities of San Jose. As core faculty for the Kaiser Permanente San Jose Family Medicine Residency, her work includes IDEA Curricular Director, Advisor, La Salud Family Medicine lead, and Practica Conmigo Profesora.

Dr. Martinez received her undergraduate degree from Stanford University in Human Biology, minoring in Comparative Literature. She received her medical degree from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA/Charles R. Drew Medical Education Program. She fell in love with Family Medicine and as a result, completed residency at the Kaiser Permanente San Jose Family Medicine Residency as part of their inaugural class. She completed a Community Medicine fellowship as the first fellow in the Kaiser Permanente San Jose Community Medicine and Vulnerable Populations program.

In addition to providing care, she is passionate about community outreach and advocacy, mentorship, graduate medical education, and evidence-based medicine.

Sudhir Rajan MD

Dr. Rajan is an Internal Medicine/Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Physician who has been practicing at Kaiser Santa Clara for over 15 years.  He currently serves as the Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency. Dr. Rajan has appointments at both the Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine and the Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Rajan is a former resident and chief resident at Kaiser Santa Clara.

About the presenter

Dr. Rae Oser is the Senior Director of Physician Education and Development (PED) at TPMG, where she leads the leadership development team and oversees the department. PED supports physicians throughout their careers, offering programs in clinical medical education, professional growth, leadership development, clinician-patient communication, health and wellness, and recognition events—truly a central part of fostering physician success.

Rae earned her PhD in clinical psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology and completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan. She joined TPMG as a postdoctoral fellow in 1997, initially working as a behavioral medicine specialist in the Diablo Service Area. She later became a Communication Consultant, which introduced her to the breadth of PED’s offerings and inspired her to join the department in 2001. Since then, she has had the privilege of working with countless physicians and leaders across the organization.

Outside of work, Rae enjoys traveling—Italy and Switzerland were on her itinerary this May—watching football, and exploring the outdoors. Though her family remains in Michigan, where she grew up, she often times visits to enjoy the best weather possible. She is also the proud parent of two wonderful daughters, who continue to be a source of joy and inspiration in her life.

About the presenter

Tracy Lieu is a pediatrician who serves as the regional Physician Advisor for Medical Education Research for Kaiser Permanente Northern California (KPNC). She develops ways to support attending physicians and trainees in research and scholarly projects, working closely with the Biostatistical Consulting Unit in the KPNC Division of Research (DOR). The DOR is a department of more than 700 people who do public-domain research that is largely supported by federal and other external sponsors. DOR faculty also support and collaborate in research by our residents and fellows.

Tracy has trained and worked at the University of California campuses at San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Berkeley, as well as at Penn and Harvard. She is a DOR research scientist and a deputy editor for JAMA. She’s happy to be here at Kaiser Permanente because it’s a great environment for research and she believes in our mission as an integrated care system. She practices clinical pediatrics in Oakland and studies how virtual care modalities including telemedicine can be designed to enhance quality and access to care.

About the presenter

Dr. Juleon Rabbani is Director of the Kaiser Permanente Northern California (KPNC) Biostatistical Consulting Unit (BSCU) and a Research Scientist in Biostatistics within the Division of Research. He leads a team of biostatisticians, analysts, and program staff dedicated to helping clinicians at every stage of training and practice turn research questions into published, peer-reviewed scholarship.

The BSCU partners with KPNC Graduate Medical Education, The Permanente Medical Group, the Community Health Research Grant Program, the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine, and the KP Scholars Academy to provide full-spectrum research support — from study design and data analysis to regulatory oversight and publication preparation. The unit currently supports more than 400 active clinical research projects and contributes to over 150 peer-reviewed publications and presentations each year across primary care, surgical specialties, medical subspecialties, women’s health, behavioral health, pediatrics, and emergency medicine.

Dr. Rabbani completed his public health training (DrPH in Epidemiology) at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD, and previously directed research activities for multiple physician training programs at Kaiser Permanente Vallejo Medical Center.
