About the presenter

Ted O’Connell, MD, FAAFP, is the Director of Undergraduate, Graduate, and Continuing Medical Education for Kaiser Permanente Northern California. He is also an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the UC San Francisco School of Medicine.

Ted has authored over 20 medical textbooks, edited 10 additional textbooks, and has written over 900 textbook chapters as well as articles in peer-reviewed medical journals. Ted is Editor-In-Chief of Elsevier’s Clinical Student, an international medical education platform. Ted is also the award-winning host of several podcasts.

Ted received his undergraduate degree with honors in Psychology and Premedical Studies from the University of Notre Dame. He attended medical school at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and completed his residency and chief residency at UCLA-Santa Monica Medical Center. Ted has completed the Emerging Leaders Program through The Permanente Medical Group, the Leading Innovations in Health Care and Education course through the Harvard-Macy Foundation, the Disruptive Strategy program at Harvard Business School, and the Design Thinking course through the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Southern California Permanente Medical Group.

Ted has been the recipient of the President’s Volunteer Service Award from AmeriCorps and the Points of Light Foundation, the Cecil Cutting Award for Innovation and Leadership from The Permanente Medical Group, and Physician of the Year from the Napa-Solano County Medical Society, and Physician Exceptional Contribution Award from the Southern California Permanente Medical Group.

About the presenter

Theresa Azevedo-Rousso is the Regional Senior Director and Designated Institutional Official (DIO) of Kaiser Permanente (KP) Northern California Undergraduate & Graduate Medical Education (KPNC). With over 30 years of experience in leading research and medical education, Theresa has been a dedicated leader within the KPNC team for the past 19 years. She is committed to developing programs that align with both KP’s and the community’s workforce development goals, while also driving innovation and empowering teams to achieve meaningful change.

As an executive leader, Theresa engages in facilitating faculty and resident development, ensuring rigorous accreditation and educational outcomes, and overseeing comprehensive program and administrative operations, workforce planning, and marketing strategies for KPNC’s residency and fellowship programs. Under her guidance, these programs train approximately 475 KP residents and fellows, 1,300+ affiliated residents and fellows, and over 800 medical students across twenty-one medical centers.

Theresa’s contributions are recognized nationally, particularly in encouraging conversations to address various healthcare education policies and practices. Her experience in education research has led to advancements in community workforce development, integrating quality and performance improvement across the educational continuum.

Theresa holds a bachelor’s degree from Saint Mary’s College of California and a master’s in public administration from the University of San Francisco. Her scholarly interests focus on areas such as community workforce development, integrating quality and performance improvement, addressing health inequities, analyzing the impact of healthcare policy on medical education, and leveraging technology to enhance educational outcomes.

Theresa resides in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she enjoys the region’s hiking and cycling trails. She is also a dedicated volunteer, actively contributing to several organizations such as the American Red Cross, Make-A-Wish Foundation, and serving as a writing coach for high school students.

About the presenter

Dr. Carlson was named associate executive director for The Permanente Medical Group (TPMG) in 2022. In this role, she is accountable for ambulatory, in-patient, and subspecialties in pediatrics and obstetrics and gynecology (ob-gyn), as well as for TPMG’s Family Violence and Prevention, Early Start, and ACEs/trauma informed care programs. Throughout her career with TPMG, Dr. Carlson has held numerous leadership positions at the medical center and regional levels. From 2007 to 2019, she served as department chief for KP Redwood City Ob-Gyn and was actively involved in the transition to Kaiser Permanente’s electronic medical record in both the outpatient and inpatient settings, the establishment of the first KP Redwood City satellite office in San Mateo, and in the opening of the new Redwood City hospital in 2014.

She was promoted to a regional role as Chair of Ob-Gyn in 2017, and under her leadership ob-gyn continued to deliver nation-leading care for cervical cancer screening, minimally invasive surgery, and low-risk cesarean delivery. In 2019, Dr. Carlson also took on a regional director role overseeing women’s health, which made several advancements in health equity, including the reduction of disparities in maternal anemia and hypertensive disease, which are the greatest drivers of morbidity and mortality in pregnancy. Along with her work in Northern California, Dr. Carlson has held national leadership roles at Kaiser Permanente, serving as co-chair of the inter-regional ob-gyn chiefs’ group and as the clinical lead for both the Digital Experience and KP Connected Care, a new hybrid virtual prenatal care program. She also continues to practice clinical medicine in Redwood City.

Dr. Carlson graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in American History, magna cum laude, from Princeton University and received her medical degree from the University of California, Davis, School of Medicine. She completed her residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Kaiser Foundation Hospital Santa Clara and joined TPMG in 2003.

Danny Sam, MD, FACP

About the presenter

Dr. Danny Sam completed his undergraduate medical education at Howard University SOM 1986 and residency at LAC-USC Medical Center 1989. He is an internal medicine physician who joined The Permanente Medical Group in 1989 at Kaiser Santa Clara, CA. He has devoted his career to the health and well-being of his patients as well as to medical education, having instructed at Stanford University, UC Davis School of Medicine, the Kaiser Permanente-Boston University School of Medicine Silicon Valley Branch Campus and Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine. Early in his career, Dr. Sam had leadership roles including clinic module leader and diabetes champion. He was the internal medicine program director at Kaiser Santa Clara for 17 + years and currently the Director of Graduate Medical Education Chair for NCAL and at Santa Clara. As program director, he had trained and graduated over 350 outstanding residents during his tenure. In addition, he has been involved in the development of the internal medicine residency program for Kaiser Permanente at the Mid-Atlantic States. Also, he is the Assistant Dean of the Kaiser Permanente-Boston University SOM (BUSM) Silicon Valley Branch Campus that trained BUSM students in their 3rd year core rotations. Dr. Sam has presented faculty development courses at various regional and national conferences. He is a member of the Association of Program Directors of Internal Medicine (APDIM) and an active member of the American College of Physicians (ACP) and the winner of numerous teaching awards, including the ACP Distinguished Teacher Award, Santa Clara County Medical Association, Outstanding Contribution to Medical Education, and the prestigious ACP Laureate Award for Northern California. He is a member of the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine in the department of clinical sciences teaching and developing curriculum for the doctoring course and co-director of the residency immersive course. Finally, Dr. Sam is the Governor of the NCAL Chapter of the ACP where he will continue his passion in medical education in a national scale.

Keedra McNeill, MD

About the presenter

Dr. Keedra McNeill is a graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Biology Pre-medicine. She subsequently completed her Doctor of Medicine degree at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN followed by pediatric residency training at Children’s Hospital of Oakland. She currently serves as the Regional Medical Director for Physician Recruitment at The Permanente Medical Group, Inc, the largest physician led medical group in the country. Outside of her administrative role she is a general pediatrician at Kaiser Permanente in Pinole, CA, and continues to participate in community work and service to underrepresented patient populations. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her husband and their two energetic young daughters.

Nur-Ain Nadir, MD

About the presenter

Dr. Nadir is the founding program director for the inaugural KP NCAL Emergency Medicine residency program in Modesto, CA. She additionally serves as the TPMG Simulation Lead Physician for KP NCAL in the TPMG department of Risk and Patient Safety where she oversees regional simulation and patient safety education initiatives. She also serves an oral simulation exam developers for the American Board of Emergency Medicine. She completed her residency training in Emergency Medicine at SUNY Downstate/King’s County hospital, where she also went on to complete her fellowship in Healthcare Simulation. She subsequently completed a Masters in Education for Health Professions (MEdHP) from John’s Hopkins University. She was core faculty and Simulation Director at the University of Illinois Peoria where she established the first Simulation fellowship at the JUMP Simulation center, prior to coming to Kaiser Permanente. She has served as the Chair of the Simulation Community of Practice at the Council of Residency Directors in Emergency Medicine (CORD-EM) and is the Past-President of the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine’s (SAEM) Simulation Academy. She has published on a wide variety of topics within academic medicine and simulation in healthcare. Her interests include DEI in medicine, professional development, remediation, real time debriefing and the use of simulation for quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.

About the presenter

Aman Sethi, MD, is a Urologist and Director of Wellness Operations for The Permanente Medical Group (TPMG).  In his regional role, Dr. Sethi and his team work closely with the TPMG executive staff, board of directors, and operational leaders to advance organizational strategies that enhance physician professional fulfillment and well-being. This includes fostering a culture in which healthcare teams are empowered with systems and tools that promote meaningful, purpose-driven work in a collaborative practice environment.

In addition, Dr. Sethi focuses on helping to ensure physicians prioritize their own self-care, have opportunities for professional growth, and have access to a diverse array of programs that support personal health, well-being, and resilience.

Originally from New York, Dr. Sethi graduated from a combined undergraduate and medical school program at Boston University, where he also completed a residency in urology. He then completed a fellowship in robotic and laparoscopic urologic surgery at Indiana University. He joined TPMG in 2008 and practices in the Diablo Service Area, specializing in minimally invasive and robotic surgery.

Outside of work, Dr. Sethi enjoys spending precious time with his wife and two children, as well as reading, hiking, traveling, and participating in various sports and cultural activities.

About the presenter

Dr. Lucia Martinez serves as the Program Director for the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Community Medicine Fellowships. She also holds multiple leadership roles including IDEA/DEI Curricular Director, La Salud Family Medicine Lead, Practica Conmingo Profesora, and faculty advisor. She oversees community medicine fellows and teaches medical students and residents during their rotations with the KP San Jose Family Medicine Residency Program and affiliated community clinics, where trainees provide care to underserved and marginalized populations in San Jose.

Dr. Martinez earned her undergraduate degree in Human Biology with a minor in Comparative Literature from Stanford University, and her MD from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA as part of the Charles R. Drew Medical Education Program. She completed her Family Medicine residency as part of the inaugural class at Kaiser Permanente San Jose, followed by a Community Medicine Fellowship—the first graduate of the KP San Jose Community Medicine and Vulnerable Populations program.

Her professional passions include community outreach, advocacy, mentorship, graduate medical education, and evidence-based medicine.

About the presenter

Tracy Lieu is a pediatrician who serves as the regional Physician Advisor for Medical Education Research for Kaiser Permanente Northern California (KPNC). She develops ways to support attending physicians and trainees in research and scholarly projects, working closely with the Biostatistical Consulting Unit in the KPNC Division of Research (DOR). The DOR is a department of more than 700 people who do public-domain research that is largely supported by federal and other external sponsors. DOR faculty also support and collaborate in research by our residents and fellows.

Tracy has trained and worked at the University of California campuses at San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Berkeley, as well as at Penn and Harvard. She is a DOR research scientist and a deputy editor for JAMA. She’s happy to be here at Kaiser Permanente because it’s a great environment for research and she believes in our mission as an integrated care system. She practices clinical pediatrics in Oakland and studies how virtual care modalities including telemedicine can be designed to enhance quality and access to care.

About the presenter

Dr. Juleon Rabbani is the Director of the Kaiser Permanente Northern California (KPNC) Biostatistical Consulting Unit (BSCU). The BSCU, based in our Division of Research (DOR), supports research and quality improvement projects sponsored by KPNC Graduate Medical Education (GME), The Permanente Medical Group (TPMG) and our Community Health (CH) Research Grant Program associated with our regional Central Research Committee (CRC). His team of scientific, programming and operational staff contributes to 400+ impactful projects and 100+ peer-reviewed papers and presentations a year. This work supports Kaiser Permanente’s non-profit status and GME program accreditation, while also strategically contributing to TPMG’s and KPNC’s work as a learning health system. Prior to his time at DOR, he directed the research of our Napa-Solano family medicine, podiatric surgery and community medicine training programs. He earned his DrPH at the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, MD and his MPH at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, CA
