Life in the Bay Area
The Bay Area, similar to most of California, has beautiful weather year-round. Whether you want to escape to one of the local picturesque beaches, hike to a mountain top, or reward yourself with world class food, museums, sporting events and music venues, the Bay Area has it all!
Culture/Diversity: The Bay Area is known for the tech industry, wineries, and world-class academic institutions. It is also known as the birthplace of the fortune cookie, gay pride flag, hyphy movement and the Black Panther Party. The population is one of the most diverse in the world. Therefore, we strive to recruit residents that will reflect the people we serve.
Activities: There are many hiking destinations in close proximity to Oakland. Whether you want to explore Point Reyes, Mission Peak or the Redwoods, there are no shortage of hikes with breathtaking scenery. Many residents enjoy taking a short road trip to Yosemite National Park or Lake Tahoe for skiing and snowboarding. Approximately a mile from the hospital is Lake Merritt, which is a great destination for a picnic, jog or yoga and home to the Saturday morning Grand Lake Farmers’ Market. There are many outdoor festivals that boast a large food truck scene. For those who enjoy sports, we are home to the Golden State Warriors, Oakland Athletics, San Francisco Giants, San Francisco 49ers, San Jose Sharks, San Jose Earthquakes and our excellent collegiate sports.
Food: The diversity of the Bay Area lends to a wide array of cuisines. Within a mile from the hospital sits many restaurants that serve a plethora of ethnic cuisines. Some of the popular restaurants are Vik’s Chaat, Brenda’s and Burma Superstar. Many residents walk to Piedmont Ave after work, where you’ll be met by professionals of all ages who frequent the restaurants and bars in order to unwind after a long week. We would be remiss to exclude the endless boba spots. If you’re looking for dessert, there is Fentons Creamery and Cupcakin’ bake shop.
Housing: There are many different housing options depending on your preference. Many residents choose to rent, but some purchase. Most residents live in Oakland or Berkeley. A popular location is around Lake Merritt, where you’ll find plenty of apartments for rent. For those who like the suburban feel or want a larger place, you’ll find great options about a 20-30-minute drive from the hospital in Walnut Creek, Castro Valley, San Leandro, and Hayward. The prices vary depending on location. However, expect to spend approximately $1500-2000 monthly. A one-time relocation stipend and a yearly housing stipend is given to help offset costs.
