Overall Goals of Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Training Program:
- To train internal medicine graduates to become expert clinicians and consultants in medical oncology and/or hematology.
- To provide three years of subspecialty training so trainees acquire the clinical skills and knowledge beyond the minimal requirements stipulated by ABIM for subspecialty certification.
- To train the next generation of clinicians in medical oncology and hematology to provide cutting edge and compassionate care.
- To equip trainees to become experts in their area of clinical and/or research focus so they become leaders in their respective areas of interest.
- To further develop within our trainees the skills for life-long self-learning to allow continued success in their careers and to maximize the care they provide for their patients.
- To develop a balanced approach between the demands of an intense profession and personal/family necessities.
- To develop the many humanistic qualities and interpersonal skills, critical thinking skills, and professional attitudes that enable trainees to excel as oncology and hematology specialists.
- To instill in trainees the desire and skills to teach colleagues, junior trainees, students and other medical staff members about cancer biology and treatment and the care of patients with cancer and hematological disorders.
- To assist trainees to further develop compassion, effective communication skills, and sensitivity to difficult patient situations and end of life issues.
Specific Program Objectives:
Development of clinical expertise
Clinical expertise is developed through both inpatient and outpatient clinical settings. The core clinical rotations are designed to cover the spectrum of oncology and hematology topics as listed below.
- Diagnosis, staging, and management of cancers of the lung, gastrointestinal tract, breast, testis, lymphoid organs, hematopoietic system, CNS, head and neck, genitourinary tract, and gynecologic tract
- Principles of multidisciplinary management of organ-specific cancers
- Clinical applications of medical imaging for solid and hematopoietic malignancies
- Principles and clinical practice of antineoplastic agents, including cytotoxic chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targets drugs, other biological agents, and growth factors
- Combined modality cancer treatment.
- Principles and clinical applications of oncological surgery
- Principles and clinical application of radiation therapy
- Principles and indications for and complications of autologous and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, including the understanding and management of post-transplant complications
- Management of infection complications
- Management of pain and psychosocial needs of cancer patients
- Palliative care, including end of life planning discussions and hospice
- Professional and personal growth in the areas of developing coping skills and compassion for caring for patients with advanced cancer
- Understand the pathophysiology of thrombotic diseases, their diagnosis and treatment
- Transfusion medicine
Technical and other skills
- Use of anti-neoplastic agents
- Assessment of tumor progression or response based on imaging modalities such as CT scan, PET scan, MRI, and nuclear imaging techniques
- Interpretation of complete blood cell counts and flow cytometry
- Performing of bone marrow biopsy and aspirate
- Preparing, staining and interpretation of blood smears, bone marrow aspirates, touch preps, and bone marrow biopsies
- Managing apheresis procedure
The program includes activities in both the outpatient and inpatient settings. Special emphasis is placed on ambulatory training in a multidisciplinary team environment. Fellows will rotate through various subspecialty clinics. The initial 18 months will focus almost exclusively on clinical training. The subsequent 18 months will allow fellows to engage in clinical research while they continue to develop their clinical skills and knowledge.
