Medical Scholars Pathway: Peer Advisors

Medical Scholars Pathway: Peer Advisors

Founded in 2015, the Medical Scholars Pathway (MSP) program is a longitudinal community college pathway program for students interested in careers as medical providers. MSP prepares students to transfer to state college or university and ultimately, medical school. The program establishes a pre-health learning community by providing supplemental instruction for STEM courses, dedicated pre-health counseling, peer advising and transfer support to a 4-year university. To further support our student’s development, in partnership with the Kaiser Permanente Napa Solano Family Medicine Residency Program, students gain community health research, leadership and professional development opportunities through participation in CHEER and the Leadership Forum.

We are excited to present the opportunity for MSP students who have successfully completed CHEER and Leadership Forum, and for upper division undergraduate premedical students who are interested in serving as MSP Peer Advisors. Peer Advisors are an integral component of the Medical Scholars Pathway. A MSP Peer Advisor model’s the AAMC recommended professional competencies that are sought after by Medical Schools. By serving as liaisons between the MSP students and the Kaiser Permanente team, Peer Advisors are instrumental in providing mentorship, social and curricular support to our MSP students.

In addition, Peer advisors facilitate and support our Mare Island Elementary School Healthy Eating and Active Living Health Promotion Program. Established in 2021, the Mare Island Project provides the opportunity for Peer Advisors and MSP students to put their Health Coaching skills into practice. The Peer Advisor will participate in monthly, one-hour sessions.

Peer Advisors will receive a stipend of up to $2,000.
