Medical Students – Educational Tracks - Global Health Elective

Kaiser Permanente Northern California is proud to offer a merit-based sub-internship in Global Health to 4th year medical students from accredited U.S. medical schools who have successfully completed at least three years of medical school training. The Global Health Sub-Internship provides students the opportunity to care for medically underserved communities locally and globally. This sub-internship includes a funded global health trip focused on sustainable and educational global health initiatives which consider the needs of the local community through direct clinical work, health education, or other support activities. The student will work with a mentor to develop a community-based project at an international site. Additionally, time will be spent at local community clinics, organizations, and health education related opportunities to enhance the understanding of the Vallejo community.

Program Requirements

Participants in the Global Health Sub-Internship (GHSI) will, on average, spend 1 week at the Kaiser Permanente host site in pre-travel preparation and education, 1-2 weeks engaged in service based learning at the international site, and a final week back at the host site for debriefing and presentation of a scholarly project.

Financial support up to $3,000 is provided to each student to offset the cost of travel, malpractice coverage, and living abroad during the elective.
