Clinical Training Overview

Our fellowship provides comprehensive training across the full spectrum of pulmonary and critical care medicine. Fellows gain experience caring for diverse patient populations throughout Northern California. Clinical rotations are designed to develop expertise in evidence-based care, procedural skills, multidisciplinary collaboration, and leadership in complex clinical environments.

Clinical Rotations

Pulmonary Consult Service

Fellows evaluate and manage hospitalized patients with a broad range of pulmonary disorders, including interstitial lung disease, airway disease, pleural disease, pulmonary infections, and pulmonary vascular disease. Emphasis is placed on consultative expertise, multidisciplinary care, and procedural training.

Medical Intensive Care Unit

The MICU rotation provides extensive experience managing critically ill patients with respiratory failure, shock, sepsis, complex multisystem disease, and advanced organ support needs. Fellows progressively develop autonomy as leaders of multidisciplinary critical care teams that include residents from several training backgrounds.

Pulmonary Physiology & Procedures

This rotation focuses on pulmonary function testing, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, bronchoscopy, pleural procedures, and other core procedural skills essential to pulmonary practice. This rotation also includes extensive exposure to interventional pulmonary procedures, including EBUS, navigational bronchoscopy, tumor debulking, and endobronchial stent placement.

Anesthesiology

Fellows develop airway management skills through hands-on experience with endotracheal intubation, perioperative care, and procedural sedation under the supervision of expert anesthesiologists.

Pulmonary Hypertension

Working alongside specialized pulmonary hypertension providers at our Kaiser Permanente San Francisco location, fellows learn the evaluation and management of patients with pulmonary vascular disease, including advanced diagnostics and therapies.

Telecritical Care

Fellows gain exposure to innovative models of critical care delivery through tele-ICU services, learning how technology can enhance patient monitoring, clinical decision-making, and regional care coordination.

Cardiovascular Surgery ICU

This rotation at our Kaiser Permanente San Francisco location provides experience caring for patients after complex cardiac and vascular surgical procedures, including advanced hemodynamic monitoring and postoperative critical care management.

Lung Transplantation

Located at UCSF through partnership with the UCSF Lung Transplant service, fellows participate in the care of lung transplant candidates and recipients, gaining exposure to transplant evaluation, perioperative management, immunosuppression, and long-term complications.

Trauma ICU

The Trauma ICU rotation at Kaiser Permanente Vacaville offers experience managing critically injured patients with multisystem trauma, hemorrhagic shock, and complex postoperative needs within a high-acuity environment.

Neurosurgical ICU

Located at our neurocritical care center of excellence at KP Redwood City, fellows care for patients with acute neurologic injury, including stroke, intracranial hemorrhage, traumatic brain injury, and postoperative neurosurgical conditions while learning principles of neurocritical care.

Palliative Care

This rotation strengthens skills in serious illness communication, goals-of-care discussions, symptom management, and multidisciplinary patient-centered care.

Sleep Medicine

Fellows gain experience in the evaluation and management of sleep-related breathing disorders and other common sleep conditions through outpatient clinics and in-lab sleep study interpretation at KP Martinez.

Electives

In addition to our established elective offerings below, fellows are encouraged to pursue additional elective experiences that align with their individual clinical interests and long-term career goals. Working closely with faculty mentors and program leadership, fellows can customize portions of their training through existing regional opportunities or by designing unique elective experiences.
