Statement of Commitment to Graduate Medical Education

The purpose of Kaiser Permanente Northern California Graduate Medical Education (GME) is to provide an organized educational program with guidance and supervision of the resident (includes interns, residents, and fellows), facilitating the resident’s professional and personal development while ensuring safe and appropriate care for patients.

Kaiser Permanente Northern California sponsors residency programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in which physicians in training can develop personal, clinical, and professional competence under the guidance and careful supervision of the faculty and staff. The programs ensure safe, appropriate, and humane care of patients and the progression of resident physician responsibilities consistent with each resident’s demonstrated clinical experience, knowledge and skill. The teaching and research activities of Kaiser Permanente Northern California provides resident physicians with opportunities to participate in scholarly activities.

As the sponsoring institution for graduate medical education, Kaiser Permanente Northern California commits that all accredited residency programs remain in substantial compliance with the ACGME institutional requirements, the Common Program and specialty/subspecialty- specific requirements. Kaiser Permanente Northern California provides an organized administrative system to oversee all residency programs through the activities of the Institutional Graduate Medical Education Committee, the Institutional Director for Graduate Medical Education, the Associate Director for Graduate Medical Education, and facility-based Directors of Graduate Medical Education. Kaiser Permanente and the participating teaching hospitals commit appropriate educational, financial, and human resources to support the residents, their educational environment, and the graduate medical education programs.
